A Manifesto for
Peace activism

eace asks as much of us as war does. The same dedication. The same readiness. The same unbroken practice. We have just been told otherwise. World peace begins inside you, and it does not stop there.

§ IOn false symmetry

Humans have rehearsed war with extraordinary care. Generals are trained for decades. Manuals run to thousands of pages. Every contingency is drilled, every alliance named, ranked, paid. Even the recovery from war, the field hospital, the cemetery, the medals, the parade, has its own stagecraft.

Peace, in the same modern human civilisation, is treated as the absence of all that, as a pause in the noise, as a hope. Something that arrives if we are very, very lucky.

This is the lie at the centre of the modern mind. Peace is not the absence of war. Peace is its own discipline, its own doctrine, its own decades-long campaign. It also has a morning drill. It also has allies and recovery. It also fails when it goes unpracticed. And it also, in its hour, asks for death of your ego, death of your attachments.

The first battle ground to conquer is your own mind. The first formidable opponent to defeat is ego.

§ IIStillness as readiness

The image we have inherited of inner peace is wrong, or at least incomplete. A person on a cushion in a quiet room, eyes closed, the world held at arm’s length. That is rest, perhaps. It is not yet peace.

Peace, the kind that stays even when life crashes. It is not stillness as an escape. It is stillness as readiness. The same way a soldier on a long watch is still: awake, oriented, undivided. Awareness in the body. Honesty about what is here. The refusal to drift to the unreal.

It may sound hard, it is not. It is here, always been here, it is now.

§ IIIThe group of six

Peace, like war, is rarely held alone. Soldiers train in formation. They live near each other. They know each other’s weaknesses and cover them. We are not soldiers. We will train in formation anyway.

A group of six, for life. A weekly sit-down that knows your name. A pair of objective outside eyes to check-in that catches your drift before you do.

This is what we are building, and the reason we are building it is straightforward. When we are together, the emergence properties manifest that are impossible to achieve alone.

§ IVThe long arc

Your enlightenment is not the end, it is the beginning of work as a selfless force for good for this world. What it makes possible is a life: fulfillment, honest work, wealth earned, seats at the tables where decisions are made.

Peace that stays inside one head changes one head. Peace that walks into rooms where money moves, where laws are written, where companies are built, changes the conditions under which everyone else has to live. So we do the harder thing. We practice. We earn. We take responsibility for systems that run the world. Not as a detour from the practice, but as its expression.

This is the long arc. Be peaceful first, so that what you build is not another anxious empire. Earn, so that you are not at the mercy of someone else’s anxious empire. Ascend, so that the rooms where peace gets defaulted in or out begin to include you. Bring complete wisdom into those rooms, the kind philosophers were once expected to bring, before the work was outsourced to the loud.

Most movements stop at the rally. We mean to walk the whole road, and to build the structures and systems that make peace the default for the people who come after.

§ VThe slow vow

We do not ask you to be perfect. We do not ask you to be loud. We ask you to begin, and to keep beginning, with people who will keep beginning alongside you.

Peace, then, is not a feeling we are protecting. It is a practice we are joining. Not a moment of stillness, but an unbroken way of standing in the world. It will ask of you the same daily care that war has been asking of every generation before yours.

Give it that, and slowly, it gives you back the Self that no longer hides behind Maya.

Begin the practice with us.
